racism in social media
Vanessa, Claudia M & Steph
Racism is a common issue among social media and the internet, the social public have defined it as ‘cyber racism’. This racism occurs on the internet through websites, images, text messages, blogs, videos and online comments. As well as racist networking sites, among social media accounts such as Facebook Twitter, Kik etc. It can be defined more broadly as any use of information and communication technologies to transmit racist attitudes and behaviors. This includes the transfer of racially offensive content that is intended to cause harm or distress to any human being. These online activities or published pieces of material result in offensive comments in relation to a persons race, colour and national or ethnic origin. It is what is known to be presented as racial hatred or cyber bullying. Social media and cyber racism has harsh effects on those who are perpetrated in the situation. This form of racism and discrimination reinforces present stereotypes to the general public, telling them that it is okay to make racist remarks without being racist and encouraging them to do so at the expense of others...just because it is apparently ‘funny’.
